About York Karate
The history of York Karate reaches back to the late 1990's when Sensei Gordon Travers and Sensei Sarah Daley headed a small goup of dedicated Goju Ryu Karate practitioners. This dojo was opened within the fitness program at York University, and is where the name "York Karate" has its roots. For several years, hundreds of York University students trained with York Karate. Eventually, the dojo grew large enough to move to a commercial space. At about the same time, Sensei Travers and Sensei Daley were inducted into the Worldwide Martial Arts Hall of Fame as "Instructors of the Year".

York Karate then relocated to a commercial space at Hwy # 27 and Steeles Avenue in Toronto. Here, the dojo continued to grow. Several areas of expertise were pursued, including Kysuho Jitsu and Pressure Point study in association with Dillman Karate International. An innovative and successful children's karate program was also developed at this time.
In January 2004, The martial arts community was shocked by the sudden death of Sensei Gordon Travers. Sensei Gordon's untimely death left his wife and York Karate's fellow Sensei, Sarah Daley with a small son. Soon, Sensei Sarah made the tough decision to suspend her role as head instructor of York Karate in order to focus on raising their son, Reid.
In January 2005 , York Karate's senior student, Randall Waechter, took over the dojo with an eye on maintaning the legacy started by Sensei Gordon Travers and Sensei Sarah Daley. Lacking the resources to start a commercial dojo, Sensei Randall negotiated an arrangement with Premier Fitness at Yorkdale Mall. This arrangement has allowed York Karate to continue training students uninterrupted...
