Goal Setting
Knowing why you are doing something and what you hope to gain from it is very important. This is true whether the activity is going to school, starting a new job or joining a Karate program.
Knowing why you are taking karate will help you measure your success as well as significantly increase your enjoyment of the art. It will also assist us in helping you get the most out of the program.
When you come to check out our class it is important for you to tell the instructors what brought you to us. That is, what are you looking to gain from your martial arts training? The ability to defend yourself? To get into physical and mental shape? self-confidence? To win big trophies in tournaments? By knowing why you wish to study with us, we can tell you if we are able to fill those needs and how (not every martial arts dojo can fulfill the needs of every martial artist. For this reason, it is important to choose your dojo and instructor wisely).
For those of you moving on to the more senior level of training, it is important to reflect and revaluate. Part of this involves the setting of your personal goals. Setting goals will help you measure your success as well as significantly increase your enjoyment of the art, and it will assist your instructors in helping you get the most out of the program. We can teach you the basic skills you need for each belt level, but without knowing your goals we can not help you attain them.
Goal setting should be a rewarding process and help you get the most out of karate; the key thing to note is that it is a process. By following some simple guidelines you will help yourself in the setting of your goals.
Your Goals must meet 5 criteria, they must be:
- Specific
- Measurable
- Attainable
- Reasonable
- Have Time Lines
You will also have 3 types of goals in respect to time:
- Long term
- Middle term
- Short term
Your long-term goal might be; to successfully complete my black belt test by January 2008. However to attain this long-term goal you will need a series of both middle term and short term goals. Please click on the Goal Planner and use the form provided to set your goals. To assist you we have provided some sample goals.
Once you have taken your first pass at setting your goals discuss them with your instructors and we will work with you to refine them and help you design an action plan to attain your goals.
